Job Overview
Location: Whitby, Ontario
Structure: Large detached two-storey residential home
Problem: Exterior rat activity observed around the property
Service: Rat treatment and exterior exclusion
Visits: 3
Summary
Our team completed a multi-visit exterior rat treatment and exclusion service at a large detached home in Whitby. Winter weather conditions initially limited full foundation access, requiring a phased inspection and exclusion approach. Exterior baiting, followed by targeted sealing and vent screening, resolved the reported activity. Final follow-up confirmed no further issues.
Background / Property Context
The property is a large two-storey detached home with high exterior walls and multiple service penetrations. Work took place between January and March, with snow accumulation affecting early access to lower foundation areas and some exterior entry points.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported ongoing rat activity on the exterior of the home and requested inspection and treatment to prevent potential entry into the structure.
Inspection & Findings
During the initial visit, a full exterior inspection was performed where accessible. Snow coverage limited visibility along portions of the foundation. Visible utility line penetrations and wall vents were identified as potential vulnerability points. No confirmed interior nesting areas were observed.
Subsequent visits allowed for improved access as weather conditions changed. Multiple plastic wall vents were identified as unprotected, and one accessible utility line penetration showed gaps consistent with rodent entry risk.
Cause Analysis
Rats were likely attracted to the structure due to exterior shelter opportunities and accessible wall penetrations. Seasonal conditions can drive rodents to seek warmth and harborage near buildings. Unscreened vents and small gaps around utility lines provided potential access points along the exterior envelope.
Treatment / Removal
Exterior rat treatment was initiated using two large, weighted, tamper-resistant bait stations placed strategically around the perimeter to address the exterior population. All pest control work was carried out by a licensed exterminator in accordance with Ontario Ministry of the Environment guidelines.
Exclusion & Repairs
As part of the exclusion work approved after the initial visit:
- One accessible utility line penetration was sealed using exterior-grade sealant.
- Three plastic wall vents were reinforced with securely fastened galvanized steel vent covers to prevent rodent entry while maintaining airflow.
All exclusion materials were installed flush to the masonry surface and inspected for stability.
Outcome & Confirmation
On the final visit, bait stations were rebaited and inspected, and all exclusion work was checked for damage or displacement. No further exterior or interior rat activity was reported by the homeowner. The service was concluded after confirming the integrity of the exclusion measures and ongoing effectiveness of the treatment.
Technician Notes
The work was completed over three visits due to winter weather limitations affecting early foundation access. Grant conducted the inspections and confirmed that all identified exterior entry risks were addressed once conditions allowed.
