Job Overview
Location: Whitby, Ontario
Structure: Very old detached two-story house
Problem: Squirrel activity inside interior walls
Service: Squirrel removal
Visits: 2
Summary
We were called to a residential property in Whitby after the homeowner reported persistent noises coming from inside the walls during early mornings and evenings. Based on the timing and nature of the activity, squirrel intrusion was suspected and later confirmed through inspection. Two separate wall cavities were affected, requiring a controlled removal process using one-way doors followed by confirmation of resolution.
Background / Property Context
The structure was an older detached two-story home with aging exterior components. Gaps along the roofline and soffit intersections were visible from ground level, creating multiple potential wildlife entry points. The age of the building materials contributed to widened openings that squirrels were able to exploit.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported loud movement and scratching sounds within interior walls, particularly during early morning and late evening hours. The activity was ongoing and raised concerns about potential damage inside the structure.
Inspection & Findings
During the initial inspection, our technician identified two large open gaps between the roof and soffit in separate areas of the home. These openings showed signs consistent with squirrel entry into wall cavities. The locations indicated that two different squirrels were occupying separate sections of the structure rather than a single shared space.
Photos from the inspection showed open roofline gaps, exposed soffit intersections, and clear access points leading into wall voids.
Cause Analysis
Older homes often develop gaps along roof and soffit transitions as materials shift and deteriorate over time. These elevated openings provide squirrels with sheltered access points close to rooflines, which aligns with their climbing behavior. Multiple gaps on the structure allowed more than one squirrel to establish separate entry routes.
Treatment / Removal
On the first visit, Grant installed two one-way doors directly over the identified entry points. This allowed the squirrels to exit the wall cavities while preventing re-entry. The homeowner was advised on full exterior exclusion options, including roofline and vent screening; however, they chose not to proceed with a complete exclusion at that time.
All removal methods were non-lethal and designed to allow the animals to exit the structure safely.
Exclusion & Repairs
While a full exclusion package was declined, localized screening was installed at the active entry points to support the one-way door setup and protect the surrounding openings during the removal period. Photos show wire screening secured along soffit and wall vent areas where access had been observed.
Outcome & Confirmation
By the second visit, the homeowner reported no further noise or activity inside the walls. The one-way doors were removed, and the previously addressed areas were inspected for signs of renewed access or damage. No further wildlife activity was observed or reported following removal.
Technician Notes
Grant confirmed that both squirrels had exited prior to door removal. Entry points addressed during the service showed no new disturbance at the time of the final inspection. The customer expressed satisfaction with the outcome and reported no ongoing wildlife issues.
