Job Overview
Location: Whitby, Ontario
Structure: Small one story bungalow
Problem: Rat activity reported inside the home
Service: Rat treatment
Visits: 3
Summary
We completed a three-visit rat treatment at a residential bungalow in Whitby after the homeowner reported interior rodent activity. An initial inspection confirmed rat presence rather than mice, and exterior-focused control measures were implemented. Follow-up visits showed declining activity, and by the final visit no further interior signs were reported.
Background / Property Context
The property was a small, single-storey bungalow with an accessible exterior perimeter and multiple ground-level utility and foundation interfaces. Surrounding vegetation and soil contact along the foundation were present, creating conditions that can support rodent movement around the structure.
Customer Concern
The homeowner contacted our team after noticing rodent activity inside the home. The concern was initially believed to be mice, with activity occurring during September. No weather-related issues were reported during the service period.
Inspection & Findings
During the first visit, a full interior and exterior inspection was conducted. Evidence observed was consistent with rat activity rather than mice. Exterior inspection identified areas along the foundation and utility penetrations that could allow rodent access. Interior inspection confirmed signs of recent activity.
Photos taken during the inspection show:
- Exterior views of the structure and surrounding ground conditions
- Gaps along the foundation edge beneath exterior cladding
- A foundation-level vent and utility penetration at grade
- Interior corner areas with sealant and trap placement visible
Cause Analysis
Rats commonly exploit small gaps at ground level, particularly around foundations, vents, and service penetrations. The bungalow’s low profile and soil contact along the exterior increased accessibility. Once established outside, rats were able to enter the structure through existing openings.
Treatment / Removal
All pest control work was performed by a licensed exterminator in accordance with Ontario Ministry of the Environment guidelines. During the initial visit, two large, weighted, tamper-resistant bait stations were installed on the exterior to address the exterior rat population. Interior snap traps were set in appropriate locations.
Technician Grant also reviewed identified entry points and provided an on-site quote for exclusion work. The homeowner chose not to proceed with sealing at that time.
Exclusion & Repairs
No exclusion or sealing work was completed during this job, as the homeowner declined the recommended exterior exclusion service. Entry points were documented for reference should future work be requested.
Outcome & Confirmation
Follow-up visits focused on monitoring and rebaiting the exterior stations and resetting interior snap traps as needed. By the third visit, the homeowner reported no further interior rat activity. The treatment was considered complete based on the absence of ongoing signs.
Technician Notes
- Visit 1: Confirmed rats rather than mice. Installed two exterior tamper-resistant bait stations and interior snap traps. Documented potential entry points and provided an exclusion quote.
- Visit 2: Rebaited exterior stations and reset interior snap traps. Activity appeared reduced.
- Visit 3: No interior activity reported. Stations and traps checked and serviced. Job closed successfully.
