Job Overview
Location: Whitby, Ontario
Structure: Large two-storey detached house with attached two-car garage
Problem: Scratching and movement sounds in the attic during morning and evening hours
Service: Squirrel removal and roof vent exclusion
Visits: 4
Summary
Pest Control Whitby responded to reports of attic noise consistent with squirrel activity. A roof-level inspection identified a compromised roof vent as the primary entry point. Humane one-way doors were installed, surrounding vents were screened, and activity was monitored across multiple visits. Follow-up confirmed successful squirrel removal, with additional exclusion completed after unrelated rodent evidence was later identified.
Background / Property Context
The property is a large, two-storey detached home with multiple roof penetrations, including several plastic roof vents. The roof layout and nearby tree coverage increase exposure to climbing wildlife accessing elevated entry points.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported scratching and movement sounds in the attic during early morning and late evening hours, raising concerns about squirrels entering the roof space.
Inspection & Findings
During the initial inspection, our technician identified damage at a plastic roof vent consistent with squirrel entry. Additional animal droppings were observed on the roof surface, indicating that more than one species may have accessed the roof area at different times.
Photos show roof vents fitted with galvanized steel screening, one-way door assemblies installed over a previously damaged vent, and surrounding roof areas after exclusion work was completed. A visible watermark appears on the images.
Cause Analysis
Plastic roof vents are a common access point for squirrels due to material weakness and roofline exposure. Elevated structures near trees allow easy roof access. Repeated wildlife traffic can enlarge minor vent damage, increasing the likelihood of attic entry.
Treatment / Removal
Humane removal methods were used throughout. One-way doors were installed over the damaged roof vent to allow squirrels to exit without re-entry. Both squirrel-sized and raccoon-sized doors were installed to account for the roof-level evidence observed.
Exclusion & Repairs
Galvanized steel vent cages were installed over three roof vents surrounding the primary entry point to prevent further access. All installations were secured to withstand weather exposure and animal pressure.
On a later visit, after squirrel activity had ceased, six open and accessible weep vents were sealed using stainless steel vented inserts following the discovery of mouse-related evidence during an interior attic inspection. No pest treatment was performed at the homeowner’s request.
Outcome & Confirmation
After the one-way doors were installed, the homeowner reported no further squirrel activity. The doors were removed on a subsequent visit, and all exclusions were inspected and confirmed intact. Following the later rodent-related findings, additional exclusion work was completed. No active wildlife entry points were identified at the conclusion of service.
Technician Notes
The initial roof inspection and exclusion work were completed by Grant. Follow-up visits confirmed successful squirrel removal, intact roof vent protection, and no ongoing wildlife activity.
